In last night’s 3-2 loss to the surging Florida Panthers, Patrick Maroon got his first share of ice time as a New Jersey Devil.
In Maroon’s first shift he got into a scrap right away, only 1:52 into the game. That fight made Maroon the new record holder for waiting the least amount of time before fighting as a new Devil.
Maroon did not go cheap on his fighting partner either, matching up with the scrappy Michael Haley.
The biggest take away from this isn’t the record, but the impact it will have on the team. That record probably does not mean much to Patrick nor the Devils, but the fight sure does.
Patrick’s fight was more of a display to his teammates. It was his first shift and he goes out there, picks a tough customer, and shows his teammates he is willing to get his hands dirty.
Although, his fight wasn’t only big for his teammates it also showed the fans what he is really about. If he continues to put up the numbers he has in the past year and a half, that will generate plenty of fan fare. If Maroon can generate offense and be one of those gritty tough guys at the same time, you are then looking at one of those fan favorite type of guys.
Aside from the fight, Maroon looked pretty good in the game as well. He recorded two assists and showed his good hands and big man presence around the net.
